CTD is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in Cedar Rapids, IA. As a local “visiting” therapy dog group, our members are the owners and handlers of their own dogs. Our teams have been bringing joy and smiles to many in the community since November, 2010. Our website enables folks to search, locate and request therapy dog teams in our city and surrounding towns.
All of our teams are screened, trained, registered and insured by national organizations such as Pet Partners and Alliance of Therapy Dogs in order to participate in animal-assisted interaction (AAI), which may be either animal-assisted therapy (AAT) or animal -assisted activities (AAA). Our teams have completed health requirements, temperament screening and volunteer training.
CTD therapy dogs make regular visits to hospitals, care centers, assisted-living facilities, hospice, mental health facilities, youth shelters, juvenile detention centers, schools, libraries and any other facilities who understand the importance of animal-assisted therapy. We also offer visits with a group of several teams on occasions. Stress relief with therapy dogs for the University of Iowa students is a special event we provide twice a year during finals.
School visits are very beneficial for children in elementary, middle schools and high schools. Just the presence of a dog can make the day brighter. Special needs students learn to be gentle to dogs and benefit from the interaction with a calm, friendly dog. Through various reading programs therapy dog teams have been trained to assist if students would enjoy reading aloud to the dogs to help improve reading skills. Two of those programs are: the R.E.A.D. Program and Pet Partner’s “Read With Me” Program.
All our services are free of charge.
CTD welcomes other teams to join us and help with our mission. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding our services. Let us know if you would like to learn more about how to get involved in the field of pet therapy. We would be happy to help you get started in the right direction.
